Chapter 22: Charges
The Pendelton Wing lobby at Lakeshore General had a marble floor, a fish tank and a brass plaque the size of a door.
THE PENDELTON WING. GIVEN BY THE PENDELTON FOUNDATION WITH GRATITUDE.
At ten o'clock, forty people stood in it.
Nurses in scrubs, a pharmacist, two cooks from the cafeteria and a janitor with his mop.
They had come down from every floor, because word moves fast in a hospital.
I stood by the fish tank with Nathaniel.
The retired nurse stood beside me in her church dress, and she had brought her pocketbook again.
The big guard held the glass door.
He had put on his dress uniform.
Dr. Lyle came out of the elevator first.
He wore his white coat, and two detectives walked on either side of him.
He did not look at the staff.
He looked at the floor.
"Everard Lyle," the first detective said. "You are under arrest for falsifying a death record, forgery, and obstruction of justice."
"I wish to say."
