Chapter 16: The Lord Unseated
Ingrith walked up to the bars and looked through them at her father.
He looked ten years older than he had on the ice.
His lantern shook in his hand.
"How did you get down here?" she said.
"I followed the cold. The crack ran under the cellar floor."
"Where is Sigrun?"
"I do not know. I woke and the cellar door was open."
His voice cracked.
"Please. Let me see your mother."
Behind Ingrith, her mother's chair creaked as someone wheeled it up the passage.
Her mother looked past the bars and did not speak.
Kaelor stood at Ingrith's shoulder.
"My queen," the raven said, very low.
Ingrith did not correct it.
"Open the gate," she said.
The black bars drew apart.
Her father stumbled through and went to his knees at once.
"Wife," he began, reaching for the chair.
"Not here," Ingrith said. "You will say it in your own hall."
"I only want..."
"You will say it in front of your household. Get up."
