Chapter 22: The Lake Drinks
Ingrith's mother took one step forward.
"I signed it," she said clearly.
"The day Ingrith was born. I wrote my name so the Rite could not touch her until it fell due."
She looked at Hrodmar.
"I did not know what you would do with it."
"You knew," Hrodmar said. "Everyone knew. Now the lake takes you."
"The lake takes no one," Ingrith said, "until the ice has judged."
The room went quiet.
She walked to the table and lifted the iron cage in both hands.
The bars were freezing and the raven pecked at her wrist in alarm.
"Easy," she said. "I've got you."
She set the cage in front of Kaelor.
He opened it with one finger, and the lock fell off.
The raven hopped out and shook itself.
"I told you not to leave without me," it said in a thin cracked voice. "I told you."
"We came back," Kaelor said.
"Hrodmar," Ingrith said, turning. "You say the Rite is broken, and I say you broke it first."
