Chapter 14: Exposures

I had never filed a claim on my own death before, and I wanted it done properly.

So at two in the morning, at my grandmother's kitchen table, I laid out five sheets of paper.

Each had a letter at the top and a stapled photo.

"Exhibit A," I said. "The allergy lunch."

"I was there."

"Exhibit B, the necklace. C, the railing. D, the lake road. E, the pier."

Quincy looked at D and E, which had no photos.

"They haven't happened yet," I said. "That's why they're called exposures."

He sat across from me in his rooftop suit with the jacket gone and his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

I told him everything.

I told him about the train platform, and chapter thirty on my phone, and the book where he was the lead and I was the woman with the champagne.

I did not say it well.

It sounded exactly like what it was, which was a woman at a kitchen table explaining that she had read about him.

When I finished, he sat for a long time.

"I'm a character," he said.

"A very good one. Everyone liked you."

"And Posy is the heroine."

"She's the one you end up with."

"And you die on the pier."

"In the book, yes."

He put his palm flat on Exhibit E.

"I don't believe you," he said.

"That's fair."

"I'd like to. I want that said first. But I know what a person sounds like when they've found a story that explains everything, and I've sat across from it in a boardroom."

"What would convince you?"

"Not a prediction. You've already done that, and a clever person can predict a cold." He rubbed his eyes. "Something Posy did that you couldn't have arranged."
