Chapter 14: Wolf Creek
Roz's POV
The hunting cabin smelled of woodsmoke and old beer.
Bronco set my father's urn on the mantel, straightened it, and stepped back to admire it.
"There," he said. "Family's home."
Two prospects stood on the porch outside.
A third sat on the cabin steps with a shotgun across his knees.
The windows were nailed shut from the inside, and I had counted every nail.
Bronco poured himself a whiskey and dropped into a chair across the table from me.
He took something from his vest pocket and laid it between us.
It was my necklace.
No, it was Dina's.
The silver chain lay curled on the wood, and the small D shone on the clasp.
I made myself look at it without flinching.
"You took it back from Misty," I said.
"She's got a neck like a chicken. It didn't suit her."
He pushed it across the table with one finger.
"Here is how this goes, babe. Cyrus is bringing every club in three states to the quarry tonight for the Memorial Run. You ride in on my arm with that on your neck."
"And Shadow?"
"Shadow's a stray who kidnapped you. You were scared. You couldn't say so in front of him."
He smiled, pleased with himself.
"Cyrus believes me. He always has."
I looked at the chain and thought of the photo with the laughing girl.
Every part of me wanted to throw the table.
Instead I let my shoulders drop.
"I'm tired, Beau," I said.
It was the first time in a year I had used his real name.
His face softened.
"I know you are."
"I want to come home. But I need to hear it from you. If I stand next to you tonight and he stands up and says things, I need to know what's true."
