Chapter 23: Her Own Line
A week later the clubhouse bar was quiet at noon.
The shelf behind it was bare where my father's urn had sat for two years.
I had never noticed how much light the empty space let in.
The hallway past lane twelve had yellow tape across it.
Nobody walked down it.
Cyrus Doyle sat at the end of the bar with a mug of coffee going cold.
Sixty Saints stood around the room, not drinking, with their arms folded.
They had called me in.
"Roz," Cyrus said.
"Cyrus."
"I'll say this in front of everybody, and then I won't say it again."
He stood, and the room went still.
"I let my own blood hurt a girl in my house, and I told her brother she ran. I was the president, and I looked away. I carry that." His voice cracked and steadied. "Anyone who wants my seat can take it by vote. I won't fight it."
Nobody moved.
An old brother near the pool table rubbed his eye with the back of his hand.
"There's one more thing," Cyrus said. "The club's voted on it. Last night."
He took a patch from his pocket and laid it on the bar.
Road Captain.
It was Ronan's old patch, the one he'd laid on this same bar the night he rode out with me.
"Your father led this line for ten years," he said to me. "And you rode that quarry track on a bad brake line and a prayer. The club wants you to take the seat."
A murmur went around.
I stared at the patch.
A month ago it would have been everything.
I had grown up under this roof, and I had wanted a place at this bar since I was twelve years old.
