Chapter 8: The Moot
The old stone circle sat on a bare hill between the two packs, where neither Alpha had a claim.
Twelve grey slabs stood in a ring, with a flat altar rock in the middle.
By sundown both packs had come, and they stood on opposite sides with a stretch of trampled snow between them.
Bram walked at my right shoulder, the whole way up the hill.
He hadn't said a word about the lake.
I was grateful.
Across the circle stood the Ironbark elders in their grey cloaks, with the Beta at the front.
Garrick stood behind them, in boots too loose for his swollen feet.
He didn't look at me.
Hester Quill stood at the back with her satchel, and she didn't look at anyone.
The Beta raised his hand, and the circle went quiet.
"We are called by the law of the Moon," he said, "to hear the matter of the Ironbark pup who died on the night of the third frost."
He turned to me, patient and cold.
"Rhea MacTavish. You are accused of rejecting your Alpha in the middle of your labour, against the advice of this pack, and of refusing every aid we offered."
"Every aid," I said.
"You declined the healer. You fought the guards. You were found shifting in the cell, which cost your pup the warmth of your body."
"I was found?" I said. "By whom?"
The Beta didn't answer.
"I wasn't found shifting. I couldn't shift. The cold held her down."
"That is for the circle to decide."
"A guard heard you shouting," said one of the elders. "You were not calm."
