Chapter 11: The Voice Note
Imogen arrived at the lodge at nine that morning in a borrowed car with a flat tire on one side.
She had driven the last mile on the rim.
When I came out onto the porch she was already standing at the foot of the steps with a small black recorder in her hand.
"You got the notebook," she said.
"I got it."
"Did you read it?"
"I read what Gilbert wrote in the margin."
Imogen shut her eyes.
"Then you need to hear this," she said. "Before you do anything else."
We went into the study, the three of us.
Dalton shut the door.
He stood by the window with his arms crossed and his eyes on Imogen, and I sat in the leather chair with my mother's notebook in my lap and my bandaged hand on its cover.
"The old man keeps everything," Imogen said. "He tapes his calls, because he doesn't trust anyone's memory. I knew the safe code, because he used it the night he paid me. It's Gilbert's birthday. He's sentimental about the wrong things."
She put the recorder on the desk.
"The tape is dated the first week of April, six years ago."
"The week I met Gilbert," I said.
"Yes."
"Play it."
She pressed the button.
A hiss, and then a click, and then two voices.
The first was Gilbert's, younger, quicker, and so familiar that my stomach rolled over.
"Dad. I have news."
"Go on," the old man's voice said, dry and slow.
"The chemistry intern. The new one from the college program. Her name is Della Brennan."
