Chapter 7: Hadrian Comes Calling

The lycans did not run for their weapons.

They stood up one by one, slowly, with their hands loose at their sides.

That was worse.

Madoc walked out to the lip of the shelf and waited with his arms folded.

I followed him, and Hild fell in at my other shoulder.

Twenty riders came over the rise in black and silver.

Hadrian rode in front.

He swung down from his horse and approached on foot, to show the camp that he came in peace.

His eyes went to Madoc, and then to the coat on my shoulders, and his mouth tightened.

"Uncle."

"Your Majesty."

"I've come for Nerys Lowther."

"She's not lost."

"She's upset." Hadrian turned to me and gave me the same patient smile he had given the crowd. "Nerys. Enough now. You've made your point."

"What point is that?"

"That you're hurt. I understand it."

"Do you?"

"I've thought about it all night. The council will want you near the throne, and so do I."

I waited.

"I'm offering you the Second's seat," he said. "War-captain of the realm. First overall of Highcrest, standing at my right hand. You'd outrank every Alpha in that valley but me."

Hild made a low noise in her throat.

"You want me to guard your Luna," I said.

"I want you to be great. Which you are."

"My sister's carrying your child."

"And you'd be her family. Her protector. It would make everyone feel better about this."

"Everyone," I said. "Including you."

"Don't be small, Nerys."

Rue bared her teeth inside me.

I felt it travel up my spine and into my jaw, and for once I did not stop it.
