Chapter 36: Bright Red
The pain stopped before the elevator reached the lobby.
Angelo had his arm around my back and his mother on my other side, and nobody in that elevator breathed properly.
"Any blood?" Dessa asked in her work voice.
"No."
"Cramping?"
"It's gone."
"It could be the ligaments. They stretch."
She looked at me hard.
"If you see anything, anything, we go. If you don't, you call your doctor first thing."
"I'm fine."
"I know you say that."
"Tala," Lourdes said, and for once it was almost a request. "No bench tomorrow."
I said I would think about it.
I did not sleep.
Angelo lay on his side with his hand spread on my stomach, awake too.
Neither of us spoke until it was light.
At five I got up and dressed for the bakery.
"Tala."
"I'm going for the morning. I'll sit between batches."
"Your mother-in-law said..."
"Your mother said I lost the first one because of a bench."
He sat up.
"And if I stay home," I said, "I'm agreeing with her."
I don't know what I expected him to say.
He looked at me for a long time.
"I'm angry," he said, "and I'm here. Take your phone. Put it in your apron."
