Chapter 37: Plastic Chairs
The doctor was a tall woman with reading glasses pushed up into her gray hair.
She did not say anything for the first minute either.
She moved the wand, and she looked, and then she turned the monitor back around to face us.
"There," she said.
On the screen was a gray shape the size of a bean, and in the middle of it a tiny light that flickered.
"That's the heartbeat," she said. "It's strong, and it's where it should be."
I stopped breathing.
Angelo made a sound I had never heard from him, a short cracked breath, and he bent over my hand and held it against his mouth.
"And the blood?" I said.
"This dark crescent next to the sac is a bleed between the lining and the wall of the womb." She pointed with the tip of a pen. "It's called a hematoma. It's common. Most of them close up on their own."
"Most," Angelo said.
"Most. I won't tell you there's no risk, because there is. I'll tell you the baby has a heartbeat today, and I want to see it again tonight."
