Chapter 10: Challenge
Tilda's POV
By noon the whole lodge knew a white wolf had run the ridge at night.
Nobody said it to my face.
They moved aside in the hall and went quiet when I passed.
I felt their eyes on my back all the way to the courtyard.
The courtyard was where Dorran told me what came next.
"The tall one wants a challenge," Keegan said, leaning on a post with a pastry in his hand. "The one who flipped your tray."
"What's wrong with her?"
"She's furious, and she's embarrassed, and she thinks you cheated."
"At being growled at?"
"At being a bride." He swallowed. "The rule is, a claimed bride holds her place against any challenger of the pack, once. If you refuse, you lose your standing."
"And if I lose?"
"You'd still be his bride. You just wouldn't be anybody's equal."
I looked across the yard.
She stood by the well with her arms folded, tall and furious.
A ring of Ironwood wolves had already formed around the packed dirt, and Dorran stood at the edge of it with his face blank.
He did not look at me. He didn't interfere.
He was letting me choose.
"Fine," I said.
I walked to the middle of the ring and pulled off my sweater.
I had shifted once, six hours earlier, and I knew nothing.
But the wolf under my ribs lifted her head, calm and sure, and she knew everything.
"First to yield," the woman called, and she dropped to her knees and went.
She shifted fast, a long, lean russet wolf, and she was on me before I had my jeans off.
