Chapter 10: The Penthouse
"The account was closed at eight this morning," the billing clerk said. "Your mother has coverage through Friday's session. After that, it's self-pay."
"How much is self-pay?"
She told me.
It was more than I earned in a year.
I stood under the white tent with the phone against my ear and twenty-two women watching me.
Then Sullivan took the phone out of my hand.
"This is Sullivan Tattnall," he said. "Put the next three months on my personal card. I'll call you with the number from the car."
He hung up.
He did not look at his mother as he took my mother's wheelchair by the handles and pushed it down the terrace steps.
Behind us, I heard Lavinia say, in a voice like a closed door, "Sullivan. Come back."
He didn't.
He drove us to my mother's apartment, carried her up three flights because the elevator was broken, and set her gently in her own armchair.
She looked at him for a long moment.
"You have your father's shoulders," she said. "That's the only nice thing I'll say about you today."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Take my daughter somewhere and look after her. She's pretending she isn't shaking."
I was shaking.
He took me to the harbor.
His company kept a penthouse above the old cotton warehouses on River Street.
It was a glass box, with the whole black river laid out below it.
I stood at the window with my arms around myself.
"I poured wine on your mother," I said.
"You did."
"You're not angry."
