Chapter 16: His Own Money
Lavinia turned slowly, and her pearls caught the fluorescent light.
"Whose money, Sullivan?"
"My grandmother's account. She left it to me at twenty-one in my name alone."
"You don't sit on it. You never have."
Lavinia's smile was small and exact.
"The board meets Thursday morning," she said. "Your seat is on the agenda. I'd hate for you to walk in as a stranger."
"Then I'll walk in as one."
"You will regret this."
"I regret a good deal," he said. "Not this."
She looked at him for a long moment, and then at the three of us.
She went out and shut the door.
The coordinator lowered her glasses.
"Mr. Tattnall, I have to ask you to be very sure. The guarantee isn't a gift. It's a legal promise for the patient's care, and it's large."
"Tell me the number."
She wrote it on the back of the sheet and turned it toward him.
