Chapter 17: Only Theirs
The townhouse door was unlocked, and the hall light was on.
I stood on the step for a full minute with my keys in my fist.
Then I went in and shut the door behind me myself.
He was in the kitchen in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled, scrubbing a pan in the sink.
The lemons were back in their bowl on the counter.
"You came," he said.
"I wasn't sure I would."
"I wasn't sure you'd open the door."
"It was open." I put my bag down. "I'm here because I want to be. Nobody wrote this. Nobody's watching."
He turned off the tap.
"Nobody is," he said. "My phone is in the kitchen drawer, switched off."
"There's no wine in the house tonight. I took it out."
"I want a clear head," I said. "I want to remember every second."
His eyes went dark.
He dried his hands slowly on the dish towel, the same ruined one, and set it down.
"I'm thirty-three," he said. "I've been handed a great many things. Tonight I'm asking for one."
