Chapter 6: The Garage

I left before dessert.

Eleanor caught my hand at the door and said only, "Go. I'll deal with him."

The townhouse garage was cold and smelled of oil and old stone.

I was fumbling for Mara's spare car key when I heard his shoes on the concrete.

"Marcella."

I didn't turn around.

"You embarrassed me in front of my grandmother," Scott said.

"You embarrassed yourself."

"You had no right to ask for that."

"I had every right. I'm your wife."

"You left your ring on my dinner plate."

"I haven't signed anything yet." I found the key and turned. "Until I do, I'm your wife, and I'm the one who sat through two years of fertility clinics alone."

He was standing closer than I'd expected.

He had not put on his coat.

The garage light made his face harder, the jaw tight, a muscle ticking just under the ear.

"Show me the results," I said. "One number. Then I'll sign your paper and you'll never hear from me again."

"I can't."

"Can't, or won't?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped around him toward the car.

His hand closed around my wrist.

It was not rough.

He had never been rough with me, not once in three years of the first and the fifteenth.

But he had never held on, either.

His fingers sat against my pulse, and I felt it start to run.
