Chapter 4: The Woman in the Photo

Marissa Dunn apologized to the whole table, in English, with her hand pressed to her chest.

The chairwoman nodded once and rose, and the dinner was over.

I was at the sink in the ladies' room ten minutes later, running cold water over my wrists, when the door opened behind me.

"Please don't leave," Marissa said. "I'll be quick."

She stood by the hand dryer with her clutch held in both hands.

"That picture was the worst night of my year," she said. "A photographer cornered me by the coat check and I tripped into your boyfriend."

"His hand was under your dress."

"His hand was catching me. It slid when I fell." She winced. "I know how it looks."

I turned off the tap.

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because you're the one who has to live with it." She held out a white card with a phone number written on the back in blue pen. "Whoever sold that picture knew exactly which night to be there. That isn't a coincidence."

It was a more useful thing to say than I expected. I took the card.

"Thank you."

"Weston is lucky," she said, and smiled at me with real warmth. "I'd keep him if I were you."

Her phone lit up on the counter as she picked it up, with a single letter on the screen, and she turned it face down before I could read the rest.
