Chapter 13: The Baronet's Terms
On Sunday I had watched the sun go down over Zelma's pond, a green acre of water with a dock and a rowboat.
Now the pond was a bowl of grey mud.
The rowboat lay on its side, and a last few catfish slapped in a puddle by the dock.
Zelma stood at the end of the planks in her nightgown and boots, looking down at nothing.
"Fifty years," she said. "Rudd's pond never went dry in fifty years."
Rex went down the bank with a feed tub and started carrying catfish to the trough.
I did not go down.
I walked the shoreline, because the water had not gone down into the earth.
It had gone out.
At the far end, a grey hose as thick as my thigh lay in the cattails.
It ran from a floating pump, up the bank, under Zelma's own fence, and away across the road ditch toward Ullrich land.
The fence wire had been cut and twisted back so neatly that it looked like a gate.
I photographed the pump, the hose, the cut wire and the stencil on the housing.
ULLRICH LAND & CATTLE, in white paint, still tacky.
