Chapter 15: The Program
On Saturday the whole of Cedar Gap read the rodeo program over its morning coffee.
I knew, because every man in the feed store held one.
We had come for mineral blocks and a roll of wire, and a card table by the register held the last entry forms of the weekend.
The room went quiet when we walked in.
Then a boy at the register said, "Morning, Your Lordship," and somebody laughed.
Rex picked up a salt block and put it on the counter.
"Morning," he said to the boy, with great dignity, and I bit my lip.
"Heard you've got a castle," said the boy.
"Eleven bedrooms and a leak in every one."
The laugh that time was friendlier.
Then the bell over the door rang, and Lamar Ullrich came in with his toothpick and his white shirt and his whole easy smile.
"Well, if it isn't the heir," he said.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
"I had a feeling about you, son. Fifteen years in my neighbor's barn, mucking stalls like a hired boy, and all along there's a hall in England with your name on the gate."
