Chapter 16: Eight Seconds
By two o'clock the grandstand at the Cedar Gap arena held four hundred people and a brass band.
I sat between Zelma and the fire chief with the photograph of the hand in my pocket.
Sir Ferdinand had taken a seat at the far end of our row, alone, in his charcoal coat, with his hands folded on a program.
He had not said a word.
"Chute four," said the announcer. "Saddle bronc, number seven. Reginald Pengelly of Cedar Gap, on a bay mare called Tuesday."
A murmur went around the stand at the name.
I watched Rex lower himself onto the horse.
The mare shook and blew.
He nodded once, and the gate banged open.
Tuesday went straight up.
She came down sideways, exactly as promised, and Rex rode her like a man sitting in his own kitchen.
One second.
Three.
I was on my feet without knowing.
At the six-second mark, something in the saddle gave a flat sound.
The cinch had parted.
The saddle swung down the mare's side with Rex still in it, and the whole grandstand screamed.
He kept his seat.
I do not know how.
He gripped the mare with his knees and his one good hand and rode the empty saddle, and the horn blew at eight.
