Chapter 17: The Numbers
I pulled the horse blanket up to my chin.
Rex, flat on the straw in his sling, did not bother.
"Dad," he said. "Hand me my shirt."
Sir Ferdinand, to his credit, did not look away from his son's face.
He reached for the shirt on the nearest bale and passed it over.
"There's a supper tonight," Rex said, working an arm into a sleeve. "Two hundred people in the barn. Jemima is giving a talk."
"A talk."
"Numbers. You'll want a seat near the front."
His father's mouth moved, and nothing came out.
"The pipe," I said from under the blanket, "is not your son's price, Sir Ferdinand. Come and listen to what it's worth."
The Founders' Supper was held in the tin barn where I had taken the microphone eight days before.
Long tables ran the length of the hall under strings of lanterns.
A wheelbarrow of pecan pies stood by the stage.
Rex sat at the head of our table with his arm strapped across his chest and half a dozen people feeding him brisket.
Sir Ferdinand sat at the far end, in the shadow of a hay bale, with a plate he did not touch.
