Chapter 22: The Stable Key
On Sunday the neighbors came to raise a new barn.
By ten o'clock there were thirty trucks in the lane.
The old frame was cleared and the sills were laid on the black ground.
The preacher's wife handed out coffee and sausage rolls to men with hammers.
Rex stood in the middle of it all in his sling, telling people where things went.
Nobody had asked him to.
Nobody was ignoring him, either.
I was holding the end of a measuring tape for the fire chief when a plain silver pickup came up the lane.
It was rented, with a barcode on the window.
Out of it stepped Sir Ferdinand Pengelly, alone, in a waxed jacket I had never seen on him.
He carried a flat parcel in tissue paper and an iron key on a leather cord.
The hammering stopped, one hammer at a time.
"Reginald," he said.
"Dad."
"I've come back."
"I can see that."
Zelma came over from the sausage table, wiping her hands on her apron.
