Chapter 23: Home

That night I washed Orville's sheets.

I hung them on the line in the dark, because I wanted them cold and clean, and I opened both windows in his room.

The liniment smell went out into the pasture.

The sound of the creek came in.

It ran under the window now, loud and bright, over the stones.

Rex stood in the doorway with his hat in his hand.

"Orville's bed," he said.

"Mine."

"Yours."

"I've decided it's too big for one." I turned back the quilt. "Come here."

He crossed the floor.

I unbuttoned his shirt myself, slowly, and slid it off the sling arm and kissed the yellowing bruise on his collarbone.

"Tonight," I said, "I don't want to be fast."

"Nor do I."

"I want all of it. Every inch."

"Then lie down, Jem."

I lay back on the white pillows.

He undressed me as if he had been given a very long time and meant to use it.

He took my shirt off over my head and let my silver hair fall back across the pillow.

He wound a lock of it round his finger and watched it shine.
