Chapter 17: The Night She Said It
That night, Silvio drove me to the bay house without asking, and he didn't turn on the radio.
He held my hand across the gearshift the whole way down the island, his thumb moving over my knuckles.
Once he lifted my hand to his mouth and kissed the back of it.
The house was dark when we walked in.
He didn't turn on the lamp this time.
He just closed the door and leaned against it and waited.
"Tell me what you want," he said, in the dark.
I had been thinking about it all afternoon.
I had stood in the window with the velvet pedestal behind me and his voice saying yes in front of everyone.
"I want you on your back," I said. "And I want you to stay there while I take what I want."
He didn't laugh.
His breath changed, and I heard it catch in the quiet.
"Show me," he said.
I crossed the room to him in the dark.
I put my hands on his belt and undid the buckle, and then the button of his trousers.
He let me do it.
He let me push him back toward the couch with my palms flat on his chest.
When his knees hit the leather, he sat down.
I climbed onto him, one knee on each side of his hips, and I looked down at him in the grey light from the window.
"You're not in charge," I said. "Not tonight."
"No," he agreed, very low. "You are."
I undid each button of his shirt and pushed it off his shoulders, and he let me.
I dragged his undershirt over his head, and his belt was already open.
