Chapter 24: Her Name on the Sign
The vows took four minutes, and nobody in the Crystal Room coughed once.
The minister was the same thin man who had opened his book for Braden.
He looked at me over his reading glasses with something close to respect.
"Deirdre," he said, "do you take this man?"
"I do," I said. "On my own terms, in my own dress, with the seams showing."
Hazel sobbed out loud, and the minister waited until she was done.
Silvio didn't wait for the minister's next question.
"I take you as you are," he said, in the same steady voice he used on the phone with the consigliere. "I took you across a table at the Lido before you'd said a word to me. I'll take you at eighty, in a robe, with the bay wind in the window."
"That's not a vow."
"It is in my family."
The minister cleared his throat. "You may kiss the bride."
Silvio kissed me, slow and deep, with his hand flat on the small of my back over the ivory satin.
Two hundred empty chairs watched us do it.
Somebody at the back started clapping.
Then the quartet started playing, badly, and everyone laughed.
The house on the bay side was quiet.
No door men.
No phone ringing.
Just the ticking of a clock downstairs and the window open over the water.
I stood by the bed in my slip and watched Silvio take off his jacket.
He hung it on the back of a chair and pulled his shirt over his head.
The grey streak looked almost silver in the low light.
"Stay there," I said.
He stayed.
I crossed the room and put my palm flat on his chest.
