Chapter 20: The Loft

The yard went up in a roar.

Somebody whistled through two fingers, and a woman shrieked, and the old roper took off his hat and waved it over his head.

Amos kissed me through all of it.

His hands were warm on my jaw and his mouth was hard and certain, and I stopped hearing anything but my own pulse.

When he let me go, I was out of breath.

"You said nobody sees," I said.

"They saw."

"You said until the twentieth," I reminded him.

"I changed my mind."

"You're allowed," I said, and I kissed him again, to the cheering.

We finished the branding.

We ate the roast at the long tables with our shoulders pressed together.

The neighbors came by one at a time to shake Amos's hand, and not one of them said the word will.

By dusk the Colby trucks were gone, and somebody had lit a bonfire in the gravel pit.

Someone's cousin had brought a fiddle.

The whole river was dancing around the fire, drunk and happy, and somebody's cattle dog was barking at the sparks.

I took Amos by the hand.

"Where are we going?"

"Quiet," I said.

"Karin."

"Be quiet and come with me."

I led him across the dark yard to the hay barn.

The big door was shut, and the bar was across it from the outside this time.
