Chapter 12: The Desk

I unfolded the paper under the desk lamp.

It was heavy and cream colored, with a county stamp in one corner and a lawyer's name across the top.

I read the first line twice.

Ward Maddox conveys to Louisa Carrie Standifer his entire one-half interest in the Standifer Ranch, including land, water rights, stock and equipment.

Under it was his signature, square and black.

Under that was the date.

It was Monday, the day he'd told the hands he was buying stud feed.

I sat down in his chair because my legs wouldn't hold me.

My name was on it.

My full name, the one he only used when he was angry.

I read it a third time and waited for it to say something else.

It didn't.

He had given me his half of my mother's ranch.

There was no price on it and no condition, and nothing in it about him.

I looked at the ledger, open on the desk next to the lamp.

He'd been writing in it when I fell asleep.

The ink was still dark.

I turned back to the front.

Lulu, first year.

Every page of the three years he'd ruled in advance had been written on.

Not the foal lines.

The margins.

The blank pages had been filled with columns and lists in his handwriting.
