Chapter 13: Terms

I walked out of the office with the paper in my fist.

Ward stood at the far end of the aisle, hat in his hand, with the grey light behind him.

He saw what I was holding.

He didn't ask what it was.

"You went through my desk," he said.

"You left the drawer open."

"I did not."

"You left it open for me," I said. "You wanted me to find it. Don't lie to me this morning, Ward."

He closed his eyes.

I crossed the aisle and slapped the paper flat against his chest, and he caught it with one hand.

"You gave away your half of my mother's ranch and went to bed with me the same week," I said. "You let me think you were mine."

"I am yours."

"You're leaving."

"After the last foal."

"That's August!"

"Yes."

The bay mare nickered in her stall, and neither of us looked.

"I'm going to set terms," I said. "You're going to listen to all of them, and you're not going to say Louisa."

He almost smiled.

It cost him something, and I saw it.

"Go on."

"One. You don't leave this ranch until I tell you to."

"Lulu, the paper says"

"I don't care what the paper says. You stay until I tell you. That's one."

"And two?"

"Two is you don't decide for me what I can stand to lose." My voice shook, and I let it. "You decided I'd be better off. You decided it in a lawyer's office. That's over."

He looked at the paper in his hand, then at me.

"Three," I said. "Right now. Here. You take me into the tack room and you do what you were going to do to me before you got scared."

"I wasn't scared."

"Then prove it."

He set the hat on a hay bale.
