Chapter 14: The Hearing
Christian opened the door with the lab report already in his hand.
Two troopers stood on the porch, a tall man and a woman holding a clipboard.
"Mr. Thorsby," the woman said. "We have a complaint that a child was removed from her legal mother."
"I'm her legal father. Read that."
She read it under the porch light, and her eyebrows climbed.
"This says the woman we're looking for is the biological mother," she said slowly.
"It does."
"Then I'd say this belongs in front of a judge, not on a porch."
"I'll have her there Monday at ten," Christian said. "Both of them."
She looked past him at me, and then at Poppy peering around my hip with a purple crayon in her fist.
"Ms. Eastwick, you stay in his sight until then," she said. "Nobody goes anywhere alone."
They left.
I leaned my forehead on the door frame and shook for a full minute.
On Monday the courtroom was paneled in dark wood, and it smelled like furniture polish and old paper.
