Chapter 13: What Lise Told Me

Lise sat at my kitchen table with her coat still on and both hands around a mug she hadn't drunk from.

My apartment is one room, so the table is also my desk, and she had moved a stack of paper aside to make room for her elbows.

I sat on the floor with my back against the cupboards, where I'd been sitting an hour before.

"Abram doesn't know I'm here," she said.

"You don't have to tell me anything."

"Yes, I do. He's been asking my permission for two years and I've been telling him to wait."

She turned the mug a quarter turn on the table.

"Sheldon joined the Night Press three years ago. He was a good member for a long time. Polite, generous, always the first to help stack chairs."

"That sounds like him."

"It's exactly him." Her mouth twisted. "Two years ago in March, we closed late. Everyone had gone, Abram was upstairs, and Sheldon offered to help me carry the paper crates down to the cellar."

I waited.

"In the cellar he kissed me. I let him, for a few seconds, because I'd had two drinks and I liked him."

Her voice was very level.

"Then I said no. He kept going. I said no again, and he put my hands over my head. I said it a third time."

"Lise."

"He didn't stop, Joss." She looked straight at me. "He didn't stop. When he was done he fixed his belt and thanked me for the help with the crates."

I couldn't say anything.

My hand had gone to my own wrist, to the four marks, without my deciding it.
