Chapter 6: The Floor

The main room was full on the fourth Saturday.

I had never seen it full.

There were thirty people in the amber light, in leather and silk and plain black, standing at the bar and sitting in the deep chairs along the presses.

Nobody looked at me as if I didn't belong.

That was the strange part.

"Tonight you kneel out here," Abram said, low, at my ear. "Beside my chair, where everyone can see. You can say no."

My stomach dropped.

"Everyone?"

"Everyone who looks. Most won't. Some will, and they'll think what I think."

"What do you think?"

"That you're beautiful." He said it flatly, as if it were the weather. "Skirt on. Shirt off. Hands behind you."

I had worn the green skirt he had picked and a black camisole under my cardigan.

I took the cardigan off in front of the whole room.

My arms were bare, and my heart was going so fast I felt dizzy.

He walked me to the leather chair at the head of the room and pointed to the rug.

I knelt.

A hush went through the nearest group, and I heard a woman laugh softly and say, "Well, finally."

Abram sat down.

He took a length of soft red rope from his pocket and drew my wrists behind my back.

The rope wound around them twice and he tied it off, snug, not tight, and I felt the knot settle in the small of my back.

I couldn't hide my hands.

I couldn't cover my stomach, or the slope of my breasts in the camisole, or my face.

I looked up at him instead.

"Breathe," Abram said.

I breathed.

A man in a grey suit came over and spoke to him about an event next month.
