Chapter 18: Tina's POV

Tina's POV

He was on my porch at dawn, as Rafa had said he would be.

I saw him through the front window from the stairs, standing on the mat in his black suit with his hat in one hand.

The sky behind him was pale gray and pink at the edges.

I had slept two hours.

I had picked up the ring from the third stair at midnight and had carried it in my robe pocket ever since.

Rafa and Quino came down behind me in their shirts, and neither of them spoke.

I opened the door.

Dom looked ten years older.

He had shaved badly, and there was a bruise on his jaw in the shape of Rafa's fist, gone yellow at the edges.

In his left hand he held a legal pad.

In his right he held a small brass key.

"Valentina," he said.

"Not yet."

I stepped out onto the porch in my bare feet.

The boards were cold and damp, and the first bird was starting in the hibiscus.

Rafa and Quino stood in the doorway behind me, one on each side.

"Give me the key," I said.

He put it in my palm.

It was warm from his hand.

"The club safe," he said. "And the book inside. Your father's, and now yours."
