Chapter 19: The Last One

He was awake.

He sat on the edge of the narrow guest bed in his shirt and trousers, in the dark, with his hands on his knees.

I switched on the little lamp by the door and locked it behind me.

The room was small and cold, with an iron bedstead, a plain white spread and a crucifix on the wall.

"Valentina," he said, and stood.

"Sit down."

He sat.

I crossed to the nightstand and set the ring on it, a plain gold band that had been warm in my pocket all day.

"Ten days," I said. "You kept track."

"Every day," he said.

"You may speak."

"I prayed for you on my porch with a rosary," he said.

"Take off your belt."

He looked at me.

Then he unbuckled it, slowly, with the same exact hands that had folded his clothes in my mother's room, and drew it through the loops.

I held out my hand, and he laid the leather in it.

"Your wrists," I said. "Together. Over your head."

He lay back on the white spread and put his wrists together above him.

I wound the belt twice around them and passed the end through the iron rail of the headboard, and buckled it tight.

I tested it with a tug.

He did not move.

His eyes were wide in the lamplight, and the gray in his hair showed against the pillow.

"I have given orders for thirty years," he said, and his voice shook. "I do not know how to be given one."

"Then learn."

I unbuttoned his shirt, and pushed it open, and looked at him.

He was lean and pale-chested, with a dark scatter of gray hair and the faint line of an old scar across his ribs.

I undid his trousers and drew them down over his shoes.

His cock was hard already, long and flushed against his belly, and it twitched when I looked at it.

"Eleven days," I said. "Look at you."

"Yes."

"Did you touch yourself?"

"No." He closed his eyes. "I had no right."

I took off my robe and let it fall.

His eyes opened and went over me, hungry, helpless, and a muscle jumped in his jaw.

"Valentina."

"Quiet."

I climbed onto the bed.

I knelt over his chest, then moved up higher.
