Chapter 23: Four Cups
At four in the morning the Cuban bakery on Seventh Avenue smelled of butter, burnt sugar and coffee, and the window was still black.
I walked in at the head of three men.
Quino held the door.
Rafa filled the doorway behind me.
Dom came last, in a dark overcoat, with his hat in his hand.
The baker looked up from his trays with flour to his elbows.
He was a short wide man with a pencil behind his ear, and he had sold my father bread for thirty years.
He looked at me, then at them, and he did not say a word.
He wiped his hands on his apron.
Then he took four small white cups from the shelf and set them in a row on the counter.
He filled each one from the great steaming pot, black and sweet, and pushed the first across to me.
"Mija," he said. "Your father stood on the left."
"I know."
"Stand where you want."
I stood in the middle.
I took the cup in both hands.
Rafa took the second, and Quino and Dom took the others.
