Chapter 31: Eat First
Nine tables from the diner went down the shaft on Saturday morning, in the cage that held forty.
Sun-ja stood over every one of them as it came out onto the Heart's floor.
It was the thirtieth of January, the last Saturday of the month, and the Pit was at rest.
The Ledger had said so at six.
[Rest. The Pit sleeps. The Heart will wake at noon, for one hour.]
Seok-hyun had never seen Floor 3 with anyone on it.
It was the hall that ran out around the glass room, long and low, with a ceiling of amber seams.
The walls were black coal-glass that took each lamp and gave it back a hundred times.
A hundred lamps hung along it on brass hooks.
In the middle of the hall the round glass room stood open on all sides, as it had since the song.
The slab stood at its center, and his mother lay asleep on it.
They set the tables end to end in a line that reached the slab.
The Nine's chairs came down last, the nine mismatched ones from the window of the diner.
The old miners carried them down themselves, one each, with the nurse behind them pushing the oxygen rack.
Four of the chairs were for men who had died.
Sun-ja set a bowl at each of the four and said nothing, and nobody asked her to.
Then she set a bowl at the head of the table, in front of a chair with a flattened cushion.
She went back to her pots.
Seok-hyun looked at the cushion for a while.
He had carried it down from the room in the Number Four door himself, that morning, with the thermos.
By eleven the hall was full.
The museum director had come in her green cardigan with her glasses on their chain.
