Chapter 11: Check the Note

Nicolette left the clinic first, with her hand over her mouth, and Corin did not follow her.

He stood in the parking lot beside his car, holding the ultrasound photo, and watched her walk to the far end of the lot and stop.

Knox waited by his truck, thirty feet off, with his arms folded.

I walked over to Corin on my own.

"Ask me," I said.

"Ask you what?"

"Whatever you were about to ask. You've had your mouth open for a minute."

He swallowed.

"Why did she say she was going to Riverside?"

"I don't know. Why did you believe her?"

"Because she cried." His voice cracked. "Every time. She'd text me, I'm so scared, and I'd go."

I held out my hand.

"Your phone."

He did not argue.

He gave it to me, unlocked, and I opened his messages and scrolled to Nicolette.

It took a long time to reach the top.

Three years of it.

Check the note, I added something, with a little heart.

Did you do the milk? Tell me how she liked it.

New tip for Friday. Trust me, she'll love it.

Don't ask her what she wants, Corin, it spoils the surprise.

I read that last one twice.

"She told you not to ask me," I said.

"She said you hated being put on the spot." He wiped his eyes with the heel of his hand. "She said women like being looked after, not interviewed. She said you told her in college that you never wanted to be a bother."

"I never said that."
