Chapter 12: The Spare Room

Knox lived on the second floor of a two-family house, up a narrow wooden staircase that smelled of floor wax.

I had not meant to go there.

I had meant to go back to Bridget's couch.

But Bridget's building had a courtyard and a window that Glenda had already sat under once, and Knox had said, in the truck, without turning his head, "I have a spare room. It has a lock."

I had said, "Okay."

It was the easiest yes of my week.

At the bottom of the stairs, my knees went.

It was only a flutter, the dizziness I had been having every morning at that hour, and I caught the rail and shut my eyes.

A hand closed around my elbow.

"I've got you," Knox said.

He didn't pull me up.

He stood there and let me find my own balance, and he held on only as long as it took.

When I opened my eyes his face was close, and his grey eyes were steady.

"Better?"

"Better."

"Say if it isn't."

"It's better."

I didn't let go of his sleeve.

I noticed it a second late, my fingers curled in the navy cloth, and I noticed that he had noticed.

Neither of us said anything.

Then I took my hand back and climbed the rest of the stairs ahead of him, with my face hot.

The apartment was plain and clean.

A long couch, a wall of books, a kitchen with one good knife and one good pan.

The spare room had a narrow bed with a blue quilt and a small lamp.
