Chapter 20: Mark's Mother
Mark's mother chose a corner table at a café across town, with her back to the wall.
She was a small woman in a grey cardigan, with her white hair pinned flat, and she had not slept.
I knew her from the funeral photographs, and from the way Knox said she wouldn't speak to Nicolette.
"I'm not here to be kind to you," she said when I sat. "I want that clear."
"That's fine."
"I read what she wrote. I read what you did to her at that party." She folded her hands on the table. "And then Glenda Dray rang me and told me all of it, in her own voice. She said you were pregnant too, and that Nicolette had said she was."
"I am pregnant," I said. "Almost ten weeks now."
"Good." She took an envelope from her bag and laid it flat. "Mark had a vasectomy two years ago in March. Nicolette drove him to the clinic. She sat in the waiting room and read a magazine."
I looked at the envelope.
"She knew," I said.
"She knew all of it. She was furious about it for two years." She slid the envelope toward me. "This is the urologist's letter, with the date and the follow-up. He sent a copy to me because Mark asked him to, in case anything ever happened."
I opened it.
The letter was one page, on thick cream paper, with a signature at the bottom.
"There's more," said Mark's mother.
She set her phone on the table between our cups and turned the screen to me.
"He left this the Tuesday before he died. I haven't played it for anyone. I couldn't."
She pressed the screen.
A man's voice came out, tired and kind, a little hoarse.
