Chapter 14: Fifty Thousand
The lobby of Hargrove Media at 8:30 on a Tuesday holds about four hundred people.
They come through the revolving doors in wool coats, holding coffee, looking at their phones.
I stood by the security desk in my gray smock with the ticket in my fist.
I had not gone home.
I had decided I would rather be seen.
Simone came out of the elevator bank at 8:31, in a camel coat, with a leather folio.
She walked across the marble.
"Mrs. Hargrove," she said, loud enough for the nearest dozen. "Or should I say, Miss Cartwright?"
"Either one."
"I wanted to do this kindly."
She opened the folio and took out a bank envelope, fat as a sandwich.
"There is fifty thousand dollars in here," she said. "In cash. And you've already got your ticket."
A woman at the turnstile stopped walking.
A man behind her stopped too.
"It's eight short of your father's note," Simone said softly, so that only the crowd could hear. "I'm told you can find eight."
My face went hot.
