Chapter 10: Jefferson Boulevard
The corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Bishop Avenue held a brick building with a green awning and a tin ceiling.
A hand-lettered sign in the window said SHOE REPAIR, though the repairman had retired in the fall.
A young man from the leasing office stood on the sidewalk with a ring of keys.
Levi was already inside, holding the door.
"What is this?" I asked.
"Your shop."
I walked in slowly.
The floor was old pine, and sunlight lay across it in long bars.
A wall of cubbyholes still held a hundred wooden lasts.
In the middle of the room stood a butcher-block table longer than a bed, scarred by sixty years of knives.
The repairman had left it.
It was the best cutting table I had ever seen.
"I took the lease in your name," Levi said. "Six months, paid."
"Levi," I said.
"It's rent, not a gift," he said.
"I can't take your money."
"Then give me a dollar a month."
I turned around.
The young man from the leasing office was waiting with a clipboard.
Levi pulled a thick envelope out of his jacket and thumbed through a stack of twenties and hundreds.
He counted it onto the butcher block and handed the pile to the young man, who checked the total.
