Chapter 12: Friday
On Friday afternoon the Kellum Tower lobby held two hundred guests, a string quartet and a banner that said HEART FUND CHILDREN'S WING.
The marble floor shone.
Waiters in white jackets moved through the crowd with trays of champagne.
Carolyn stood at the foot of the grand staircase in a pale blue suit, shaking hands with her pearls on.
I wore a gray dress I had sewn on Tuesday, and I stood near the fern by the empty reception desk.
I had told Levi I would come, and I had told him I would listen.
He found me by the fern and took my hand without a word.
His palm was damp.
"After the speeches," he said, low. "I take you upstairs. I tell you all of it."
"I'm listening," I said.
"Reyna, whatever I say, I need you to hear the end before the beginning."
"That makes no sense."
"I know," he said. "I'm sorry."
The quartet stopped.
