Chapter 14: The Reservation
Levi's POV
At five o'clock I put the keys to my father's building in Bishop Terrell's palm.
There were nine of them on a steel ring, and one of them still had my father's initials scratched into the brass.
Two hundred people watched me do it.
My mother watched me do it.
Terrell closed his fingers and said, "Thank you, son."
I did not answer him.
Reyna walked past me on her way to the door.
Her shoulder touched my arm, once, hard, and then she was gone through the glass without turning her head.
I felt that touch all the way down to my hand.
The guard held the door for her.
The crowd opened for her again, and I stood there and watched until her Corolla pulled out of the lot.
Then I walked out to my father's truck.
I made it as far as the driver's seat.
I put both hands on the wheel, and I cried for the first time since the funeral.
It was not a quiet kind.
It went on until my ribs hurt and the windshield fogged and the sun came down behind the crane.
