Chapter 9: White Rock Lake
He spread two moving blankets in the bed of the truck, and I was on my back on them before he finished tucking the corners.
White Rock Lake lay black and flat behind us.
The oaks above us were bare, and through the branches the skyline glowed, small and gold, five miles off.
It was Tuesday night, and nobody was out here but a man fishing from a dock far away.
"It's forty-eight degrees," Levi said.
"Then hurry up."
He crawled over me on his hands and knees, and his mouth came down on mine, warm and slow.
I pulled his sweatshirt over his head and threw it at the tailgate.
He pulled mine off in the same motion, and the cold hit my bare skin, and I shrieked.
He swore and lay down on top of me to cover as much of me as he could.
"Better?"
"No," I said. "Do it again."
He did it again, and kissed my throat, and the cold stopped mattering.
I slid my hands under his shirt and dragged my nails down his back.
He pressed his hips between my thighs.
Through two layers of denim I felt him, long and hard, grinding against exactly the place I needed.
I wrapped my legs around him and rocked up to meet it.
"Look at us," I said. "Two grown adults, dry-humping in a truck."
"I'll make an honest woman of you in a minute."
"You already tried that."
He laughed into my neck, and bit it, and I gasped.
We kept at it, slow and stupid and perfect, until the denim was damp and neither of us could stand it.
His mouth went down my collarbone and to my breast.
He circled my nipple with his tongue, and then took it between his lips and sucked.
I arched against him with a groan that carried over the water.
"Shh," he said, smiling against my skin.
"The man on the dock heard me."
"The man on the dock is jealous."
I laughed, and then I stopped laughing.
He had done the same thing to the other breast with his teeth, and I felt it between my legs.
I pushed him over onto his back.
"My turn to pick," I said.
