Chapter 7: Two Bunches of Roses

I left the house without saying goodbye, and from the driveway I texted Ivy the word we had agreed on: Waffles.

She answered before I had my seatbelt on.

Do I need to come stand in a doorway?

No, I wrote. I just wanted to use the word.

Good, she wrote. Lasagna at seven. It will be bad. Bring a fork.

I read that twice at a red light, and smiled at the windshield.

The lasagna was bad.

We ate it on her floor because her table was covered in nursing flashcards, and she told me about the patient who had tried to bribe her with a lottery ticket, and I laughed until my wrist hurt.

At the door she said, "Two more days."

"Then I sign."

"I'll still be here Tuesday," she said, and I went home with my pulse going wrong again.

On Sunday morning I couldn't sit in the sublet.

I drove to the cemetery on the east side, where my father was buried under a plain gray stone.

I hadn't been there since the funeral.

I parked at the gate, where the car had been two years ago, and I walked up the path between the rows.

My father's stone said his name and the years.

On the grass in front of it lay a bunch of white roses, still wet from the morning.

They were not mine.

I stood there with my hands in my coat pockets and looked at them.
