Chapter 11: Six Years Across a Room
He looked at me for a long moment with his forehead still against mine.
Then he said my name, once, low, and I knew he was done holding back.
His mouth came down on mine again.
This time it was slow, and he took his time with every part of my mouth.
I got both hands into his shirt and pulled it out of his belt.
"Bedroom," he said against my mouth.
"I'm not walking."
He laughed, shaky and short, and I felt it in my chest.
He picked me up.
I wrapped my legs around his waist and kissed his jaw, his throat, the nick from his razor, and he carried me down the dark hall with his hand spread under me.
The bed was wide and made with hotel corners.
He set me on the edge of it and knelt on the floor in front of me, and my breath went.
"Tell me what you want," he said.
"You. Everything. I've had six years."
"Six years of what?"
"Watching you across rooms."
His hands closed on my ankles and slid up my calves, slow, and my skin woke wherever he touched.
He undid the buttons of my black dress one at a time and pushed it off my shoulders.
I stood up and let it fall.
He looked at me in the light from the window, and the look went through me, hot and unhurried.
"God, Ciara."
I took off his shirt myself.
He had a scar low on his ribs from the crash, a pale seam I had never seen, and I put my mouth on it.
His whole body shook.
I pushed him back onto the bed and climbed over him, and his hands came up my thighs and found the edge of my underwear and stopped.
