Chapter 22: Last Good Day

By six that evening, the Lund kitchen table had been dragged into the middle of the front room and covered with two bedsheets.

Clover had decided it was a banquet.

She stood at the stove in an apron that said KISS THE COOK, flipping grilled cheese with both hands.

Angie sat at the head of the table in the blue velvet dress from the Memorial Dinner.

Dixon had carried her to the chair himself, and tucked a pillow behind her back without being asked.

On her right sat Colin in a clean shirt.

On her left sat the housekeeper, in her good winter coat, still buttoned.

"I'm not staying long," she said.

"Take your coat off," Clover called, "or I'll cut you a grilled cheese in the shape of a coat."

The housekeeper looked at her, and something that had been clenched in her face for twenty years loosened.

She took off the coat.

They ate, and it was loud.

At the end of the meal, Angie tapped her ginger ale with a spoon.

"I want a promise from each of you," she said. "Out loud. You can't argue."

"We can argue," Clover said.

"You can't win."

She turned to her best friend first.
