Chapter 18: The Forged Verse
Torren flew us down from the pass at noon.
He carried me and Posy on his back, and he did not once let the pain show in the line of his wings.
We landed in the main courtyard, and I slid off with Posy on my hip.
He turned back into a man with a gasp I felt in my own side.
"Hall," he said. "Now."
We walked in through the great doors at the end of the Council's morning.
Hesper stood on the dais before the Ember Throne with a scroll in her hand.
Twenty lords lined the walls.
"Hear the Flame," she was saying, "as it spoke to its Oracle last night."
She read from the scroll in her smooth voice.
"A woman of the low river will bring a child to the hearth of kings."
"She will take the king's fire, and then his crown, and then his keep."
"The keep will fall in her name, and the Flame will go out."
She lowered the scroll.
"That is the true prophecy," she said. "The one I carried six years ago, spoken again."
"The Oracle has confirmed it."
