Chapter 17: Empty House

The Camry backed out of the driveway at noon on Friday, and by eight that night nobody in the house was pretending anymore.

"Pizza," Dylan said, jingling Tate's car keys. "We're going for pizza."

"It's a long drive," I said.

"It's a twenty minute drive."

"Take an hour."

He looked at Brody and Wyatt, who were standing very straight by the refrigerator.

Then he looked at me.

"You're sure."

"I told you what I wanted."

"You did." His mouth twisted. "It's a lot to hear from your stepsister."

"Then go get pizza, stepbrother."

Tate said nothing.

He touched my wrist as he passed, one fingertip, and went out after Dylan, and the car started in the drive.

The silence in the house was enormous.

"So," Brody said. "Is the thing happening, or..."

"Upstairs," I said.

They followed me up the stairs without another word.

In my room I turned on the lamp.

I wanted the light.

I wanted to see them, and I wanted them to see me looking.

"Take your shirts off," I said.

Brody had his off before I finished the sentence.

Wyatt took longer, with his big hands fumbling the hem, and when it came off I saw how hard he was breathing.

"Wyatt," I said. "Come here."

"Okay."

"Lie on the bed."

He lay down on his back with his eyes on me.

I took off my tank top and shorts and stood in front of them, with nothing on.
