Chapter 15: Rain on the Terrace
The Bone Gate stood at the edge of the Abyss, two black pillars with a rope of dried vines between them.
Yan Chenxi stood under the vines in plain white, with no crown and no sword.
His hair hung loose to his waist, and his feet were bloody from the road.
Qinghe stopped ten paces away, in the red dusk, with her hand in Jinye's.
Then she let go of it.
"This is yours," she told him quietly. "I'm only standing behind you."
Jinye looked at her for one breath.
Then he walked up to the gate, alone, and the Prince lifted his head.
For a moment they only looked at each other.
It was like watching a man talk to his reflection, if the reflection had better color.
"You came," said the Prince.
"You said you would stand here until I did. It's cold, and you're a fool."
Jinye's voice was easy, and his hands were not.
"What do you want?"
"What you have." The Prince's voice cracked on it.
"I will not take it by force. I will not hide that I want it."
"Let it come home to me, Jinye."
"You mean me."
"I mean the part of me that is walking around in a black coat."
"I'm not walking around in a coat. I'm standing in a gate, being rude to a Prince."
Something almost a smile crossed the Prince's mouth, and was gone.
"You would lose nothing," he said. "You would be in me. Everything you feel for her, I would feel. Nothing would be wasted."
"I'd be you."
"You would be whole."
"I have been whole for three hundred years," Jinye said.
He did not raise his voice.
"I hate onions. I cannot sing."
"I once fell off a roof to win a bet with Chi Wen and broke my arm."
