Chapter 7: Ember Pool
Qinghe opened the door in her robe, with her hair wild and her mouth swollen.
Yan Chenxi stood on the step in the lantern light.
He had taken off his crown, and his hair was loose on his shoulders.
He looked restless, his expression raw.
"I couldn't sleep," he said.
"Then walk somewhere else."
"I heard..."
He stopped, and his eyes went past her to the dark shape of the Demon Emperor.
"I do not understand what I feel, Qinghe. It started the moment you came to the doors."
"That sounds like a you problem."
"Three hundred years, and I never once felt..."
"Goodnight, Prince Yan."
She shut the door in his face.
Then she leaned back on it, breathing hard, and Jinye's arms came around her from behind.
"Take me home," she said. "Your home. Tonight."
He did not ask why.
They left the East Pavilion in the dark.
The black chariot was already waiting outside the garden wall, with Chi Wen asleep on the driver's bench and his hat over his face.
Jinye lifted her inside, and the cloud dropped away from the Nine Heavens.
The Abyss was red.
Qinghe had never seen it, only heard the stories.
She had expected black stone and screaming.
Instead the sky was a deep wine color, full of low slow clouds.
A huge pale moon hung over a city of terraced roofs and lamp-lit streets.
Blood Moon Palace stood on a black cliff at the center, tier on tier of lacquered red towers, and every window glowed.
"It's beautiful," she said, surprised.
"It's yours," Jinye said. "If you want it."
"Don't say that in front of people."
